CSS Course Dilemma

So here’s the thing. Having been at my job now for a month, I’ve done a hell of a lot of reading the ins and outs of CSS layout design and such like and come across various issues with cross browser compatibility, so much so that I’m pulling out my hair when IE5 on the MAC doesn’t want to behave itself after Firefox, Safari, Camino and all the others are fine…

Anyhow, reading articles and books is fine, but realising that going on a course/workshop is needed is even better, so I put it on the table for my boss and she was happy to pay for it if I could find one suited for my needs.

Enter the dilemma…

Came across a course being held in January by Dave Shea of CSS ZenGarden by CarsonWorkshops which looks great. Now I was originally gonna get booked onto this, but then came across an advanced CSS day course run by GBDirect. This course seems to be more technical and allows a thorough going through of what you need to know, whereas the Dave Shea course seems to concentrate more on the workflow and popular problems you may encounter in layout building.

The problem is that the GBDirect course isn’t available until March, whereas the CarsonWorkshop is in January…now do I hold out until March or take the January course? And before anyone asks, I don’t think its an option to take both at this point in time!

I would wait for the GBDirect course. I can totally recommend Dave Shea, however you’ll find that a large amout of your time is spent fixing browser incompatibility issues, so the GBDirect would seem a better choice.

I wouldn’t worry too much about IE 5 for Mac. MS doesn’t support this browser anymore and I have only come across one mac person in the past two years that actually still uses this browser, everyone else has moved on to Safari or Firefox (both in my case). Its so slow and bad at rendering standards compliant layouts that I know of quite a few big name web developers that refuse to support it. I’ve relegated it to the same class of browsers are the pre 4.0 family.

Hey there,

Thanks for your interest in the workshop. It’s filling up pretty fast - about 8 seats left.

We focus on bringing the world’s top talent to teach web dev and design courses. This is why we’re working with Dave - he’s one of the best.

We also work quite hard at making it more than just a training day. There’s a lot of social interaction which adds tons of value to the day.

On top of that, the Survival Kit is *packed* with valuable stuff.

Hope that helps you make up your mind :)
